Our professional interior designers in Windsor are back again with yet more beneficial advice! This week, we take a look at what to look for when choosing a sofa. As the workhorse of your living room, and an often pretty weighty investment, it’s important that you choose correctly!
What To Look For When Choosing A Couch
First of all, we must mention quality. This doesn’t mean you must splurge all of your cash on a sofa (though that’s entirely your choice), but it does mean you should read up on the brand you’re buying with and consider reviews by those that have bought a sofa with them already. Chances are a reasonably priced sofa and a similar-looking one that has an extravagant price tag will both most likely be standing upright in your home for the next 20 years, barring lots of misuse! Whether or not you decide that it’s worthwhile investing in a high-end designer couch as opposed to a budget model, our interior designers in Windsor are here with some top tips!
- When choosing a new sofa your lifestyle plays a more important role than you may think. If you know your home is only temporary for a few years and your sofa will experience lots of moving around, an expensive top-notch sofa isn’t going to be suitable and will be ruined before you know it.
- Another thing to consider is family (including pets) - whether you’re in line for parent of the year or enjoy your space more than most, a beautiful upholstered white sofa isn’t going to stay white very long after the cat’s claws have ripped it to shreds and the children have had their mucky boots on it! If this sounds like your family, opt for a sofa that is stain-resistant (although we don’t think that says ‘buy me now!’ you’ll be thankful for it), and avoid pastels and light coloured fabrics.
- Style of Upholstery Design - As a furniture piece that will often have to endure a multitude of interior design updates that surround it over the years, that boxy-cushioned thing you call a sofa, couch, settee, divan or other, should have a design that’s fitting. Don’t go for an upholstery design or colour that’s on trend just for that reason, go for something that is more neutral – you can add interchangeable cushions and throws in different colours and designs for a new look.
Last but certainly not least, don’t choose stylish design over comfort. A sofa can be aesthetically pleasing, but it is above all else, a piece of furniture that has a functional purpose – that is, somewhere comfy and cosy to sit. Whether it’s been a long day in the office or it’s an occasion to celebrate with family and friends, the sofa is where all of those special moments happen.
